Energy management startups will reshape the world for a greener future

Businesses all over the world – and in Africa – are taking on new and more ethical methods to fuel their companies, by investing in green technology startups.
'New green technology startups are popping up globally to provide solutions for effective energy management, in particular, Incooling and Verdigris. ‍ The market is ripe as innovators and scientists are realizing that the climate problem needs practical solutions. With that in mind, startups are being formed specifically for dealing with the issues we face. Climate change  has huge implications for businesses around the globe – even in South Africa . Many companies and global initiatives are taking an ethical stance on the matter, whilst others are more reluctant. As an aside, one doesn’t even have to a start-up with an innovative idea. Take for example Kasthurie Govender, a Durban mum who penned a climate book for children ; showing that we can all do our part. For the more reluctant companies, startups are providing other selling points, such as reducing costs through energy management to ensure a greener future for our planet. While not a South African initiative, it does provide an example of what is possible. ‍Based in the Netherlands, Incooling is a new semiconductor startup and have partnered with European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN). They operate with CO2 technology in order to cool internal components of a computer. InCooling have raised more than €630,000 – approximately R9.8m, according to the exchange rate at the time of publishing – through ventures and awards. The team plans to move to Silicon Valley very soon. Soon enough, cooling systems will not be able to keep up with 3D integrated chips, so essential technology is an answer to future problems. Thermal energy management is vital as it can increase the life span of components. Watch: InCooling teaser ‍Another innovative example is Verdigris, an American based startup founded by Mark Chung 2011. Chung was inspired by a very expensive electricity bill after a trip away. His startup is focused on energy management and creating smart buildings via AI by using green technology which allows companies to monitor all of the electrical feeds projected in their base. The technology reduces excessive energy during the busiest hours and before systematic faults appear the technology detects them. Chung has already expanded to 38 countries. With all our Eskom-related worries , South African innovators and start-ups would be wise to take a leaf out of Chung’s book. We are going to need to sooner rather than later. A climate crisis is upon us, and as a global community, we need to do all we can to slow climate change down. Statistics point that just  100 companies  are responsible for 71% of emissions released globally. On a business level, green technology is showing to be more cost effective by minimizing costs on power, and South Africa – and Africa in general – is slowly waking up to that fact. Africa has the potential to generate tons of renewable energy, yet two out of three people living in an African country do not have access to electricity. Thankfully, companies such as Africa Clean Africa and Freedom Won are heeding the call. African Clean Energy  created a stovetop that runs off any biomass. It uses approximately 70% less energy and reduces costs by up to 50%. Their innovative stovetop also burns cleanly and is safe to use indoors. Freedom Won focuses on electric vehicles, such as their Jeep Grand Cherokees used to drive tourists on safaris. They have also developed an energy storage system that enhances lithium-ion batteries, similar to the Tesla Powerwall.'

Viewers will soon be able to view the rebooted version of ‘Gossip Girls’. Some fans tweeted about their frustration about the series knowing the original creators are involved in the remake. The casting line is different, A new line of private school teenagers will be seen in the new version of GG, where fans find it dark. It will include the new means of social media and how New York is changed after 8 years.
